Social Justice League washes for the world

The Social Justice League grabbed soap buckets and scrubbers Oct. 11 and went out to save the world, one car at a time.

The fundraiser car wash for Darfur had been planned since the beginning of the year.

Club president Sarah Kurisu initiated the idea, though it would not have been possible without the club members and volunteers, she said.

“Lots of people came back [after their own car wash] to help out,” said Kurisu.

Though the membership of the league has not been high, she said, by the end of the day, there were 15 students helping with the car wash.

Most of the workers started the wash at 9:30 a.m., Kurisu said. They were consistently busy from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., washing about 70 cars altogether.

“The worst back-up we [saw] was about 14 cars,” said Kurisu.

According to Emily Samuelstuen, the group ended up making more than $600 with the help of donations from David Sanmugam of Metro Detailing Specialists, a car wash company.

Sanmugam, a member of San Diego First Church of the Nazarene, located behind Brown Chapel, was moved when he heard about the league’s cause. Darfur is currently in the midst of a genocide.

Cassie Purdy, vice president, said the money will go to Students Taking Action Now for Darfur (STAND).

“No one should have to go through that [genocide],” said Purdy. “ It’s just not fair.”

Other donors included the daughter of PLNU social work professor Pat Leslie, who gave the group scrubber mitts and towels.

The Social Justice League, backed by Leslie, plans to raise more awareness and funds, possibly with a film forum.

“We hope to do some partnering with other clubs in the future, but things are still in the works,” said Kurisu.
